Cloud platforms make it easy to create resources. Understanding the bill is harder—especially when tags are missing and environments share accounts. This post covers habits we recommend early. It is not a promise of savings.

Tag what you create

Agree on a small set of tags—owner, environment, product—and apply them when resources are created. Catch-up tagging later is slower and less accurate.

Separate production spend

Keep production costs visible in their own account, project, or subscription when your vendor allows it. Mixed environments make it hard to explain a spike.

Set budgets you will actually check

Alerts only help if someone reviews them. Start with a monthly budget on the accounts that matter most, and a weekly glance at unusual line items.
